Series: Acts: Church on the Move
Summary
Missional Living
Series: Acts: The Church on the Move
Text: Acts 8:26–40
Main Idea:
To be used by God missionally, we must be Spirit-led, immediately obedient, and committed to doing things God’s way.
I. Living missionally requires submission to the leading of the Holy Spirit.
Acts 8:26
A. Philip is instructed to go without knowing the full outcome or destination.
B. This reflects the normal pattern of Spirit-led guidance seen throughout Scripture (Psalm 37:23–24; Proverbs 20:24).
C. The Spirit’s leading is always consistent with the Word of God. As Thomas Brooks noted, the Spirit never contradicts Scripture.
D. Claims of divine guidance must be tested by Scripture, not personal feelings.
E. Faithful mission requires dependence on the Spirit as we obey Christ’s command to go.
II. Living missionally requires immediate obedience.
Acts 8:27–35
A. Philip responds without hesitation—he rises and goes.
B. When prompted again, Philip runs to the chariot, demonstrating urgency and trust.
C. The Ethiopian eunuch, though influential in his homeland, was religiously marginalized as a Gentile and eunuch.
D. Despite limitations imposed by religious systems, the eunuch sincerely sought God.
E. God sovereignly arranged the moment as the eunuch read Isaiah’s prophecy.
F. Philip explained the Scripture by proclaiming Jesus as the suffering Messiah.
G. Immediate obedience positioned Philip to participate in God’s redemptive work.
III. Living missionally requires doing things God’s way.
Acts 8:34–38
A. The New Testament pattern for missional living includes:
-
Sensitivity to the Spirit
A. Immediate obedience
B. Faithful gospel ministry takes people to Scripture and proclaims Christ clearly.
C. The proper response to the gospel includes belief, repentance, and baptism (John 5:24; Acts 2:38).
D. Baptism follows belief and repentance, consistent with the teaching of Scripture (Matthew 28:18–20).
E. The mode of baptism in this passage demonstrates immersion, consistent with the meaning of the word baptizō.
F. Scripture consistently presents baptism as the obedient response of a believing disciple.
G. Missional faithfulness requires obedience to God’s timing, method, and design.
Conclusion
Missional living flows from knowing God’s Word, trusting His Spirit, and responding with obedience. God uses ordinary believers who are attentive to His leading and committed to faithfulness. Scripture must shape both our message and our method.
