He is the King

He is the King
Mark 9:1-13
October 6, 2024

Read: Mark 9:1-8 - And he said to them, “Truly, I say to you, there are some standing here who will not taste death until they see the kingdom of God after it has come with power.” And after six days Jesus took with him Peter and James and John, and led them up a high mountain by themselves. And he was transfigured before them, and his clothes became radiant, intensely white, as no one on earth could bleach them. And there appeared to them Elijah with Moses, and they were talking with Jesus. And Peter said to Jesus, “Rabbi, it is good that we are here. Let us make three tents, one for you and one for Moses and one for Elijah.” For he did not know what to say, for they were terrified. And a cloud overshadowed them, and a voice came out of the cloud, “This is my beloved Son; listen to him.” And suddenly, looking around, they no longer saw anyone with them but Jesus only.

Main Idea: Jesus was the King, He is the King, and He will always be the King.

I: Jesus the King is revealed.

Mark 9:1-4 - And he said to them, “Truly, I say to you, there are some standing here who will not taste death until they see the kingdom of God after it has come with power.” And after six days Jesus took with him Peter and James and John, and led them up a high mountain by themselves. And he was transfigured before them, and his clothes became radiant, intensely white, as no one on earth could bleach them. And there appeared to them Elijah with Moses, and they were talking with Jesus.

A. Jesus just got done rebuking Peter and telling the disciples that He would die and…
Mark 8:34-38 - And calling the crowd to him with his disciples, he said to them, “If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me. For whoever would save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake and the gospel’s will save it. For what does it profit a man to gain the whole world and forfeit his soul? For what can a man give in return for his soul? For whoever is ashamed of me and of my words in this adulterous and sinful generation, of him will the Son of Man also be ashamed when he comes in the glory of his Father with the holy angels.”

B. Now He tells them that some of them would see Him in His glory before they would die.
C. This of course is alluding to what happens here in this text.  The great revealing of Jesus the King.
D. Faith became sight for Peter, James and John – and they really didn’t know what to do…
Mark 9:5-8 - And Peter said to Jesus, “Rabbi, it is good that we are here.

E. This is the second time the Father claimed Jesus as His Son…
F. Even with faith becoming sight, Peter, James and John still didn’t understand the dying and rising again – and certainly didn’t understand that the Messiah wouldn’t stay and oust the Romans…

II: The King would Suffer.

Mark 9:9-10 - And as they were coming down the mountain, he charged them to tell no one what they had seen, until the Son of Man had risen from the dead. So they kept the matter to themselves, questioning what this rising from the dead might mean.

A. Peter, James and John just saw Jesus in His glory, they moved from faith to sight.  But they still didn’t understand what was happening.
B. They didn’t understand that Jesus would die, rise from the grave and ascend into Heaven, ushering in the Church age.
C. His suffering would be immense – but it was intentional…
D. We are now in that Church age- the time in between, while we wait for our King.
E. So, what should we be up to while we wait for His return?
F. Quite a lot of things really, but let’s simplify it to three things:
• Attempt to be more like Him.
• Love God and love others.
• Represent Him in a lost world.
G. In this time in between, we are pilgrims on Earth. Our citizenship is in Heaven, we are only here temporarily.
H. Politics – have a “heaven first mentality”.
• We must vote – and vote for Christian values first.
-protecting the unborn and poor/vulnerable people

-protecting the right to proclaim the gospel

-and vote for people who best represent Christ-likeness…

• A “Heaven first mentality” also means that we should love across the aisle.  This doesn’t mean agreeing with each other, but this means we must be charitable towards one another.
• A “Heaven first mentality” also means we should be a people of prayer – we should pray for our elections and those who are elected.
• And a “Heaven first mentality” means that win or lose politically, Jesus is on the throne and His will, will be done.

III: The King will Return.

It’s not over…

Mark 9:11-13 - And they asked him, “Why do the scribes say that first Elijah must come?” And he said to them, “Elijah does come first to restore all things. And how is it written of the Son of Man that he should suffer many things and be treated with contempt? But I tell you that Elijah has come, and they did to him whatever they pleased, as it is written of him.”

A. Moses and Elijah were two of the most important people in the OT – and Elijah’s presence is especially significant as he was prophesied to come prior to the arrival of the Messiah.
Malachi 3:1 - “Behold, I send my messenger, and he will prepare the way before me. And the Lord whom you seek will suddenly come to his temple; and the messenger of the covenant in whom you delight, behold, he is coming, says the Lord of hosts
Malachi 4:5 - “Behold, I will send you Elijah the prophet before the great and awesome day of the Lord comes.

B. John the Baptist came in the spirit of Elijah, thus partially fulfilling this prophecy.
C. I say partially, because this prophesy has an already and not yet fulfillment.
D. Jesus will return and Elijah (I believe) will come first and reach a remnant of the Jews.
Revelation 11:1-3 - Then I was given a measuring rod like a staff, and I was told, “Rise and measure the temple of God and the altar and those who worship there, but do not measure the court outside the temple; leave that out, for it is given over to the nations, and they will trample the holy city for forty-two months. And I will grant authority to my two witnesses, and they will prophesy for 1,260 days, clothed in sackcloth.”

E. Sticking in Revelation, I want to read to you John’s description of the glorified Jesus: Revelation 1:12-16 - Then I turned to see the voice that was speaking to me, and on turning I saw seven golden lampstands, and in the midst of the lampstands one like a son of man, clothed with a long robe and with a golden sash around his chest. The hairs of his head were white, like white wool, like snow. His eyes were like a flame of fire, his feet were like burnished bronze, refined in a furnace, and his voice was like the roar of many waters. In his right hand he held seven stars, from his mouth came a sharp two-edged sword, and his face was like the sun shining in full strength.
F. This sounds an awful lot like Mark’s description from the Transfiguration - And he was transfigured before them, and his clothes became radiant, intensely white, as no one on earth could bleach them.

Main Idea: Jesus was the King, He is the King, and He will always be the King.

Jesus the King who gave up His royal robes to serve the unfaithful, who allowed Himself to be humiliated, beaten and killed on our behalf, did it all to the glory of the Father and to offer salvation to us…

1 Corinthians 11:23-26 - For I received from the Lord what I also delivered to you, that the Lord Jesus on the night when he was betrayed took bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it, and said, “This is my body, which is for you. Do this in remembrance of me.” In the same way also he took the cup, after supper, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in my blood. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me.” For as often as you eat this bread and drink the cup, you proclaim the Lord’s death until he comes.

He will return, perhaps soon and together we cry “Come Lord Jesus”.  We were guilty and without hope.  We look forward to His return for one simple reason: He paid our ransom.  And Jesus paid it all…
