He is All We Need

He is All We Need

Mark 6:53-56
When they had crossed over, they came to land at Gennesaret and moored to the shore. And when they got out of the boat, the people immediately recognized him and ran about the whole region and began to bring the sick people on their beds to wherever they heard he was. And wherever he came, in villages, cities, or countryside, they laid the sick in the marketplaces and implored him that they might touch even the fringe of his garment. And as many as touched it were made well.

These four verses are more than they first appear.  This is a summary statement of the rest of Jesus’ ministry in Galilee.  There was actually quite a bit that went on during the time that these four verses represent.  Jesus is healing all kinds of diseases and again, His fame was growing.  We don’t know how many people were healed by Jesus, but you can imagine, an almost mob-like scene as people are clamoring to get their sick friends and family members to the One, they now know can heal them.

Main Idea:  No matter what problem you are facing in your life, Jesus is all that you need.

• Verses 33-44 - Jesus feeds the 5,000 men.
• Verse 48 - Jesus sees the disciples struggling in the storm.
Mark 6:48 - And he saw that they were making headway painfully, for the wind was against them. And about the fourth watch of the night he came to them, walking on the sea.

• Verse 48 - Jesus walks on water.
• Matt. 14:28-29 - He allows Peter to walk on the water.
Matthew 14:28-29 And Peter answered him, “Lord, if it is you, command me to come to you on the water.” He said, “Come.” So Peter got out of the boat and walked on the water and came to Jesus.

• Verse 51 - Jesus calmed the storm.
Mark 6:51 - And he got into the boat with them, and the wind ceased. And they were utterly astounded,

• John 6:21 - The boat is immediately at the shore.
John 6:21 - Then they were glad to take him into the boat, and immediately the boat was at the land to which they were going.

• And now in today's text, Jesus is healing every sick person who is brought to Him.

Two things I want to point out about our text before we jump off into our main points this morning:
Mark 6:53-56
When they had crossed over, they came to land at Gennesaret and moored to the shore. And when they got out of the boat, the people immediately recognized him and ran about the whole region and began to bring the sick people on their beds to wherever they heard he was. And wherever he came, in villages, cities, or countryside, they laid the sick in the marketplaces and implored him that they might touch even the fringe of his garment. And as many as touched it were made well.

1. Be a hope runner.
2. Tell of Jesus’ goodness in your life – how did people know that touching the hem of His garment would result in their healing

This point is driven home with Jesus’ proclamation that He is the Bread of Life.  This happened during the time represented in our text while Jesus was still in Galilee. So fresh off the miracles we just discussed, as captured in John 6 – Jesus teaches that He is all we need.

John 6:26-27, 32-40
Jesus answered them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, you are seeking me, not because you saw signs, but because you ate your fill of the loaves. Do not work for the food that perishes, but for the food that endures to eternal life, which the Son of Man will give to you. For on him God the Father has set his seal.” Jesus then said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, it was not Moses who gave you the bread from heaven, but my Father gives you the true bread from heaven. For the bread of God is he who comes down from heaven and gives life to the world.” They said to him, “Sir, give us this bread always.” Jesus said to them, “I am the bread of life; whoever comes to me shall not hunger, and whoever believes in me shall never thirst. But I said to you that you have seen me and yet do not believe. All that the Father gives me will come to me, and whoever comes to me I will never cast out. For I have come down from heaven, not to do my own will but the will of him who sent me. And this is the will of him who sent me, that I should lose nothing of all that he has given me, but raise it up on the last day. For this is the will of my Father, that everyone who looks on the Son and believes in him should have eternal life, and I will raise him up on the last day.”

I. Is the real, biblical Jesus enough for you?

John 6:26-27
Jesus answered them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, you are seeking me, not because you saw signs, but because you ate your fill of the loaves. Do not work for the food that perishes, but for the food that endures to eternal life, which the Son of Man will give to you. For on him God the Father has set his seal.”

A. Jesus’ answer indicates that they were following Him for the wrong reasons.  Not because He is God, but what He had given them with the food.  People have made a habit of drawing close to God, or away from Him for selfish reasons.
B. Throughout the NT, people often followed Jesus for all the wrong reasons
• “They had their fill of the loaves”
• After seeing Him perform a miracle
• To try to prove Him wrong or catch Him in something they could persecute Him for (Pharisees and Sadducees)
• Ultimately, many people wanted to make Him King, and overthrow the invading Roman government
C. Is He enough for us today?  I think most in this room would say absolutely yes.  But, often times our prayers and relationship with Him would indicate that we look at Him as some sort of genie that can grant our wishes.
• Our prayers are often self-centered and become the basis of our relationship with Him…. Remember, Jesus taught us how to pray, “Our Father who art in Heaven, Hallowed be thy Name.  Thy Kingdom come; thy will be done…”. IT’S ABOUT HIM
• Wiersbe says it this way, Jesus isn’t the great “I will” He is the great “I AM”. He is God and that is enough.
• If you would do this, then I will follow you (We have creation that proves…). God doesn’t have to prove Himself to us.  Twice in John 6, Jesus makes it clear that those who know who He, know because the Father has shown them….
• If we put conditions on our following of God, we are not following Him at all.

Main Idea:  No matter what problem you are facing in your life, Jesus is all that you need.

II. We can be confident that Jesus is all we need to face the trials of today.

John 6:32-34
Jesus then said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, it was not Moses who gave you the bread from heaven, but my Father gives you the true bread from heaven. For the bread of God is he who comes down from heaven and gives life to the world.” They said to him, “Sir, give us this bread always.”

A. The Father has given us everything that we need to have victory in this life and confidence in the life to come.
B. Weirsbe compare/contrast)
Warren Wiersbe compares and contrasts Old Testament Manna and the Bread of Life:

Manna: Met a physical need temporarily, Only sustained physical life, For only one nation, Israel, For only thirty-eight years, At no cost to the Lord, Only delayed physical death, God sent a gift
Bread of Life: Meets a spiritual need eternally, Imparts eternal life, For the whole world (John 6:51), From Adam to the end of time, At great cost, Jesus had to die, Conquered spiritual death, God sent the giver of all gifts

C. The Bible is full of examples that can give us confidence that no matter what is going on in our lives, He is more than enough:
• Philippians 4:19 - And my God will supply every need of yours according to his riches in glory in Christ Jesus.
• 2 Peter 1:3 - His divine power has granted to us all things that pertain to life and godliness, through the knowledge of him who called us to his own glory and excellence
• 2 Corinthians 9:8 - And God is able to make all grace abound to you, so that having all sufficiency in all things at all times, you may abound in every good work.
• Philippians 4:13 - I can do all things through him who strengthens me.
• Joshua 1:9 - Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be frightened, and do not be dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.”
• Ephesians 3:20 - Now to him who is able to do far more abundantly than all that we ask or think, according to the power at work within us

Main Idea:  No matter what problem you are facing in your life, Jesus is all that you need.

III. He can be trusted with our eternity.

John 6:35-40
Jesus said to them, “I am the bread of life; whoever comes to me shall not hunger, and whoever believes in me shall never thirst.

A. The Bread of Life is the bread that fills and sustains for an eternity…
B. Jesus makes the point, that He “came down from the Father”.  Meaning, He has always been.  His existence didn’t begin at His earthly birth.
John 1:1-5
In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things were made through him, and without him was not any thing made that was made. In him was life, and the life was the light of men. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.

C. In V. 40 Jesus makes it clear that He will be there “on the last day”
D. Jesus was the “I AM” at the very beginning, He will be the “I AM” at the end and He is the “I AM” today.
E. What does this mean for us today?  It means that He is consistently enough.
• He is enough for our salvation
• He is enough to provide our needs, so we need not worry
• He is enough when the Dr. says cancer
• He is enough when the employer says layoff
• He is enough the spouse says goodbye
• He is enough when the child is rebellious
• He is enough when you are 4,000 miles from your family
• He is enough when you need your house to sell….
• However, these scenarios turn out, He is enough
• If you aren’t putting it together yet, He isn’t just enough, He is more than enough.

Conclusion:

Do you trust Jesus with your life and eternity? He is enough for you!
Walk through this life with a conscious dependance on Christ for your present troubles and trust in Him for your tomorrow’s.
Trust Him – This is the gospel
