Some Things Never Change
Series: Galatians: The Church on the Move
Passage: Galatians 3:15–29
Main Idea: In an ever-changing world, our God and His promises never change.
Introduction
Technology changes fast.
- Rotary phones → smartphones
- Forgotten plans → constant connection
But some things never change:
- Death
- Taxes
And most importantly:
God does not change.
In a world of broken promises and constant shifting, Galatians 3 reminds us:
God’s promises stand forever.
1. God’s Promises Stand Forever
(Galatians 3:15–18)
Paul points back to Abraham to make a crucial argument:
- God made a promise
- That promise came before the law
- The law did not change the promise
The law…does not annul a covenant previously ratified by God.
The Abrahamic Promise
God promised Abraham:
- A people
- A land
- A blessing to all nations
In you all the families of the earth shall be blessed. (Genesis 12:3)
That promise ultimately points to Christ.
The Key Truth
God’s promises are:
- Not dependent on human performance
- Not altered by later events
- Not weakened by failure
Application
We live in a world where promises are often broken.
But God:
- Always keeps His word
- Always fulfills His promises
Some of His promises to us:
- Forgiveness (1 John 1:9)
- Strength in temptation (1 Corinthians 10:13)
- Salvation (Romans 10:9)
- Eternal home (John 14:2–3)
- Future restoration (Revelation 21:4)
God’s promises never fail.
2. God’s People Are Known by Their Faith
(Galatians 3:19–22)
The promise by faith in Jesus Christ might be given to those who believe.
Why the Law?
Paul asks:
Why then the law?
Answer:
- To reveal sin
- To expose our need
- To show we cannot save ourselves
The law is:
- Good
- Holy
- But unable to justify
The Key Distinction
God’s people are not identified by:
- Perfect obedience
- External performance
They are identified by:
Faith
Faith Has Always Been the Way
- Abraham → believed God
- Moses → chose God over Egypt
- Israel’s faithful → trusted God’s promises
“The righteous shall live by faith.”
Application
You are not accepted by God because:
- You perform well
- You measure up
You are accepted because:
You trust Him.
3. God’s Invitation Is for All Who Believe
(Galatians 3:26–29)
In Christ Jesus you are all sons of God, through faith.
A New Identity
In Christ:
- You are a child of God
- You are clothed in Christ
- You are made new
If anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. (2 Corinthians 5:17)
A Unified People
The gospel removes barriers:
- Jew / Greek
- Slave / free
- Male / female
All are:
One in Christ Jesus
A Guaranteed Inheritance
Heirs according to promise.
Through Christ, we receive:
- God’s promises
- Eternal inheritance
- Secure future
Application
The invitation is open:
- Not based on background
- Not based on status
- Not based on performance
All who believe are welcomed.
Conclusion
In a world that constantly changes:
- Cultures shift
- Standards move
- Promises fail
But God:
- Does not change
- Does not forget
- Does not fail
He invites all who believe to become:
- His children
- His heirs
- His people
Main Idea: In an ever-changing world, our God and His promises never change.
