The Unlikely Convert

Series: Acts: Church on the Move

Summary

The Unlikely Convert

Series: Acts: The Church on the Move
Text: Acts 9:1–19a

Main Idea: Even when considering his persecution of the Church, we are all more like Saul than we may realize.

I. Like Saul, we were all enemies of God.

Acts 9:1–2

A. Saul is clearly portrayed as an enemy of God, actively persecuting the Church.
B. He was not passively indifferent but intentionally opposed to Christ and His people.
C. Scripture reminds us that hostility toward others is rooted in a deeper spiritual problem (1 John 3:15).
D. God’s standard reveals universal guilt—breaking the law at any point makes one guilty of all (James 2:10).
E. Friendship with the world places us in opposition to God (James 4:4).
F. All people fall short of God’s glory and stand in need of justification through Christ alone (Romans 3:23–26).
G. Like Saul, we were guilty and unable to cleanse ourselves—salvation is truly good news because it is a gift of grace.

II. Like Saul, God initiated our salvation.

Acts 9:3–9

A. God pursued Saul while he was actively opposing Him.
B. Jesus identifies Saul’s persecution of believers as persecution against Himself.
C. Saul’s physical blindness illustrates his prior spiritual blindness.
D. Saul did not find Christ; Christ confronted Saul.
E. Scripture consistently teaches that God must open our eyes to see truth (Matthew 16:15–17; Psalm 119:18).
F. Every genuine conversion is ultimately the result of God’s gracious initiative.

III. Like Saul, we need the help of one another.

Acts 9:10–19a

A. Ananias obeyed God despite fear and understandable hesitation.
B. God sovereignly prepared both Saul and Ananias through divine revelation.
C. Saul’s restoration involved the obedience and ministry of another believer.
D. Christian growth and sanctification are never meant to happen in isolation.
E. God often uses people we would not choose to accomplish His purposes in our lives.

Conclusion

God’s pursuit of Saul reminds us that no one is beyond the reach of grace. The same God who intervened in Saul’s life has intervened in ours through Christ. Salvation is entirely the work of God, applied through His people, for His glory.
