We are excited to welcome Alex Rivas as our next Director of Student Ministries. With the recent announcement that Matthew Spiegel (our current director) accepted a student ministry position in his hometown of Columbus, the family ministry staff has been working hard to make sure SURGE Student Ministries is fully-staffed going into the fall. Alex will officially start in this capacity on August 9th.

Alex was on the Intern Team this summer and has done a phenomenal job and it is evident that God has called him to student ministry and prepared him to serve in this role as our next director. He will be working alongside the Family Pastor, Phil Leineweber, to continue our tradition of excellence in student ministry here at Berean Baptist Church. Read below a brief introduction to Alex!

Tell us about yourself!

My name is Alex Rivas, I’m a Chicago native, and am graduating from the Moody Bible Institute where I’ve been studying Youth Ministry. I’m currently engaged to the wonderful Alyssa Leach and will be getting married to her in the fall of this year. I really enjoy playing video games, table top games, and role playing games (gamer in every sense of the word). My favorite book of the Bible is Proverbs for its vast wealth of wisdom, but my favorite passage comes from Matthew 6:25-34 for the way it has ministered to my life when things were most difficult.

Why student ministry?

I love student ministry and everything about it! I accepted Jesus into my life at the age of 16, and it was because of the student ministry I was in and the people that poured into my life through it. I was brought in high school not really looking for God, but He showed himself to me and captivated me through the study of His word and the story of Jesus’ redemption of humanity. And as I said, it was the work of youth leaders and different people in the body that ended up helping lead me to Jesus. Because of them and the great role that they had in my life, it pushed to pursue at least serving in student ministry. As time went on I began to feel God’s leading to study for ministry, so I dropped out of architecture school to apply to Moody and have never looked back since.

What are you most excited about?

I’m simply excited to be able to finally serve students and the Lord in a vocational capacity. I have been on a long journey to get to this point and it feels surreal. It seems like yesterday I was sitting in my architecture studio wrestling with the thought of going into ministry. But it is amazing to be on the other side of that decision and to be able to look back and see God’s faithfulness through everything that has happened since I’ve made that decision. My heart is for students and helping them to cultivate a deep love for Jesus and what He has done on the cross for our sins, because I believe it is at the cross where all is redeemed. I can’t wait to be not only serving students, but their families as well as we all grow in a deeper love and knowledge of our Savior!

How can we be praying for you?

Please pray for the adjustment for Alyssa and I. We both dearly love Chicago and see this as a stop on our journey for ministry, but still have had some difficulty adjusting and getting used to either being back (for Alyssa) and simply being in a new and very different place (for me). I’ve lived in Chicago almost my whole life, and this is the first time I won’t be there and away from my family and close, lifelong friends. So please pray our transition is smooth and our move from Chicago to here goes well. But also pray for me that I would be protected from the grasp of Satan. Entering into this role is no small thing and I have been told since going to Moody that Satan and his army would have a target on my back as a ministry leader. So please pray for my spiritual well being, that I would be constantly joined to the Lord and trusting Him with my life each and every day.
