Summer Intern Introduction: Katie Walthour
1. Tell us a little about yourself? Where are you from?
I’m a missionary kid from Nigeria but l lived in Mansfield for the majority of my life. I currently go to school at Moody Bible Institute in Chicago and I’m studying TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages). I’ll graduate this coming December!
2. What is your connection to Berean? Involvement in Church/SURGE?
I was a part of Berean when I was in elementary school and have been involved in the community here since then. I was baptised here when I was young, was a part of leading the SURGE worship team in high school, volunteered with Berean Kids, and I was a SURGE intern in 2018. Having been less involved since moving to Chicago, and I’m excited for the opportunity to be working with the church again this summer!
3. Why this internship?
I love Berean Baptist Church. I have made lifelong friends here and have been discipled my many students and leaders as I grew up here. Individuals in this church have watched, encouraged, and aided me as I grow in my relationship with Christ and leadership ability. This internship will allow me to continue to be discipled and be part of an incredible intern team, and also allow me to serve this church which has supported me so well through the years. I’ve been a part of this church family for a long time, I love our missions focus, and I am excited for the transitions that have happened in the past few months. It’s definitely exciting (and a privilege!) to be a part of Berean during this transitional time.
4. What is your life verse and why? (or a verse that is important to you)
John 17:23 “I in them and you in me, that they may become perfectly one, so that the world may know that you sent me and loved them even as you loved me.” This verse is important to me because it clearly says that God the Father loves us with the same love that he has for Jesus Christ. When we say that we are one with Christ, this is literally what it means! It is ridiculously amazing- and really true!! As a student at a Bible college, I hear different opinions and “interpretations” on so many topics of faith. A clear articulation of my salvation and life in God in this verse has been an incredible encouragement to me in the past few years.
5. Where do you see yourself in five years?
In 5 years I see myself as an English language teacher either as a missionary teaching nationals in a different country or teaching immigrants in a diverse city in the States. I’d also love to teach children, and I’m praying that that is part of what God has for me in the future!
6. How can the church pray for you?
Pray that I would have wisdom for my future plans as graduation is coming up quickly. Please pray for God’s guidance and my submission to him in each future step.
