Series: 1 & 2 Peter – Faithful Endurance
Text: 2 Peter 3
People often rely on the past to predict the future. Just as job applicants are assessed based on past performance, believers can look to God’s perfect track record of faithfulness.
Peter reminds the Church to anchor their understanding of the future in the reliability of the past.
2 Peter 3:1-2
“This is now the second letter that I am writing to you, beloved. In both of them I am stirring up your sincere mind by way of reminder, that you should remember the predictions of the holy prophets and the commandment of the Lord and Savior through your apostles…”
Peter contrasts the stability of God’s prophets with the instability of false teachers.
Old Testament prophets Peter may have referenced:
Psalm 50:1-4
“The Mighty One, God the Lord, speaks and summons the earth from the rising of the sun to its setting... He calls to the heavens above and to the earth, that he may judge his people…”
Isaiah 13:10-13
“…I will punish the world for its evil, and the wicked for their iniquity… Therefore I will make the heavens tremble, and the earth will be shaken…”
Micah 1:4
“And the mountains will melt under him, and the valleys will split open, like wax before the fire…”
False teachers deny what God has said will happen, but Peter affirms the certainty of God’s promises.
2 Peter 3:3-7
“Scoffers will come in the last days with scoffing… For they deliberately overlook this fact, that the heavens existed long ago… and the earth… is stored up for fire, being kept until the day of judgment and destruction of the ungodly.”
We can trust that what God has said will come to pass—so we must live accordingly.
Just like we sometimes delay when we think we have more time, many believers grow complacent while waiting for Jesus’ return.
God's delay is not slowness but patience.
2 Peter 3:8-10
“But do not overlook this one fact… that with the Lord one day is as a thousand years… The Lord is not slow to fulfill his promise… but is patient toward you, not wishing that any should perish, but that all should reach repentance…”
Every day of delay is a day of opportunity—for repentance, obedience, and preparation.
We are encouraged to faithfully handle God’s Word and live in expectation.
2 Timothy 2:15
“Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved… rightly handling the word of truth.”
Eternal things should be our focus, not temporary things that will pass away.
While earthly markets are unpredictable, God’s promises are guaranteed.
Eternal investments are not based on guesswork—we have insider knowledge through God’s Word.
2 Peter 3:11-13
“What sort of people ought you to be in lives of holiness and godliness, waiting for and hastening the coming of the day of God… But according to his promise we are waiting for new heavens and a new earth in which righteousness dwells.”
1. Time
Ephesians 5:15-16
“Look carefully then how you walk… making the best use of the time, because the days are evil.”
How are you using your time? What are you prioritizing?
2. Treasure
Matthew 6:19-21
“Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth… but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven… For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.”
Malachi 3:10
“Bring the full tithe into the storehouse… put me to the test… if I will not open the windows of heaven for you…”
Tithing is a way of investing in the Kingdom. It reflects our trust and priority.
3. Talents
Romans 12:6-8
“Having gifts that differ… let us use them: if prophecy… service… teaching… generosity… leadership… mercy…”
Our gifts and skills are not just for personal gain—they're meant to build the Kingdom.
The world is uncertain, but God is not.
His promises are trustworthy.
His return is sure.
His investment plan is eternal.
Are you ready for His return? Are you investing in what truly lasts?
